The DFINITY Foundation was founded in Zug, October 2016, to create a World Computer blockchain network called "DFINITY," whose key utility token was called "DFN" (referred to as "dfinities" in the plural). The DFN ledger was created using smart contracts on the Ethereum network in February 2017. Later, the DFINITY network was renamed to the "Internet Computer," with the aim of using a more descriptive and brand-free name. The protocol suite that forms the network was named "Internet Computer Protocol" and for this reason it was decided to rename the DFN token the ICP token.
